| ✞ | With a life on the line, out of sight, out of mind. | ✞ | | | | ✞ | To ascend or decline? To retreat or to climb? | ✞ | | I shivered against the wind and huddled further into my coat, watching as thin wisps of cold breath escaped my lips and disappeared into the blackness. I knew better than to walk home at night, and as a few of the street lamps began to dim, I immediately regretted my decision. But then again, what other choice did I have? I could have waited for the doctor on duty to get off--I would have only waited another hour and a half for a ride home--but I was so tired I could not muster the patience.
My home was not far away, but it wasn't ideal walking distance either. Still, I quickened my pace--partly due to the cold that was now seeping through my body, and partly because the dimming street lamps sent a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with the temperature.
As I continued down the street, I noticed a dark figure walking down the sidewalk in my direction. This made me grow wary, as finding others walking at 3:30 in the morning was not a usual sighting. Sidestepping, I padded across the street so as not to pass whomeverit was.
"Better safe than sorry."
Maybe the gesture was rude, but I did not want to take any chances. I watched out of the corner of my eye as the man in the top hat passed me, not even casting a glance my way as he did so. His lack of interest in my presence made me chuckle softly to myself, and I relaxed my tense muscles in relief.
"No more scary movies for you, Korrina,"" I laughed silently, stepping off the curb and crossing the street once again. I wasn't too much farther to my home, and the thought of a warm, soft bed made me want to cry out with joy. Tomorrow was my day off. The pure bliss accompanying the idea of resting all day lit a fire under my feet, a new found energy increasing my speed so I could get home faster, however much faster that would be. I just wanted to go home.
My journey was cut short, however, by the sharp object that was now lodged in my shoulder. The shattering scream that sprang forth from my lips startled me, but my confusion was immediately cleared by the second and third puncture wounds that ravaged my back and spine. I dropped to my knees and reached behind me, only to find my fingers sticky with a hot, crimson ooze that provoked yet another, ear-splitting shriek from the depths of my stomach.
Blood...but why? I looked up, only to meet the gaze of a tall, muscular man--a man who's crazed eyes held a fury that shook me down to my bones. Who was he? My vision began to blur, and I struggled to remain upright, squinting my eyes to make out his features, what he was wearing--anything that could help me identify him. What was he wearing...? Was that a top hat?
"W-why...?" I mumbled, though I was now finding any form of speech to be difficult. I felt my body crumple, and as I mustered all of my strength in an attempt to scramble away, I was pulled backward and shoved onto my bloodied back. The cruel blade hanging over me briefly caught the moonlight, illuminating the bloodied weapon, but before I could scream I was hit with yet another blow.
"Is this it...? This...this is how I die?"
With each additional blow, the pain began to dwindle. Instead, I felt an eerie, heavy cold sweep over my chest and limbs--making my body too heavy to move any longer. That's it. This was the end for me. I was dying.

| "You know, food shouldn't be playing with other food." He would smirk; his crimson eyes shimmering beneath the moonlight. He then would swoop down, and in an instant he would have the being shredded to pieces. Blood covered him completely. | |

A bloodcurdling scream rang through the cold, silent air, but I could not even muster the strength to wince at the chilling sound. I struggled in an attempt to open my eyes, but my vision was so blurred and unfocused it was useless. I was, however, able to make out another figure--a new stranger, standing over the crumpled body of whom I assumed was my attacker. Where did he come from?
This man...who was he? What was going on?? Maybe I didn't have to die after all.
"Please..." I managed to produce words, though they were slurred and barely above a whisper. "Hospital...please..."
