World War Two AU- TWIST

“War?” She asked, confused yet again. She was starting to realize that she really had no idea what she was getting herself into. What kind of world she was being brought back to which was supposedly her home. A place she’d never before seen in her life.

"Long story short, a prince was murdered." He said. "A lot of people were accused of treason and exiled, and then the family accused them of working for another government and declared war." he shrugged.

“Great.” She muttered.

“So I don’t know who I am, though you say I must be a noble. Which means that my true family is probably in the middle of this war. So I’m going to a world I know nothing about which will probably want to destroy me the minute they see me hoping to hurt whatever family I may belong to.”

It was the most she’d ever spoken at one time and yet she seemed ready to say a hell of a lot more.

"Not so." he said. "You don't look like Eastern. The war is going on in the East. When we get there, we'll be headed west." he informed her.

Madeline simply shook her head in disbelief, unsure what the hell she was getting herself into here. It almost seemed like it would be far easier to just stay in the human world and pretend to be one of them. Though, she had to admit that she was curious, curious about her origins. About the truth of who and what she was.

“How much longer until we reach the portal?” She asked, staring out the window again.

"Not too long..." He said glancing over to the young woman. "You should let your disguise down." he suggested looking forward. "Youll feel much better." he promised.

Not too long after, as he predicted, he slowed the jeep to a halt and stepped out, his long golden hair twirling behind him in his wake.

In this form he looked younger. 20 years old, give or take.

Madeline watched him out of the corner of her eye and sighed, finding she much preferred his true form. For some reason it made her feel more comfortable around him, less wary of what he was doing. Though she couldn’t exactly return to her own form as easily, not unless she wanted to be wearing rags again like she had the night before.

She stepped out of the jeep easily, her petite form alighting from the car with ease and grace. Turning to him she wondered if he’d understand why she couldn’t let her wings come back.

"If it's the dress you're worried about, I woudl suggest taking your claws to the back." he advised, already walking a short ways away from her. He took a knife off of his belt and sliced his little finger open vertically, his blood immediately oozing to the surface.

He held his hand out and walked in a circle before kneeling down, drawing a few odd marks in the dirt, ignoring the fact that the grass leaves and grime was caking itself onto his cut.

Madeline looked down at her small hands and concentrated, turning her beautifully manicured nails into something longer and much sharper. Reach behind her she ripped the dress expertly, allowing her black wings to free themselves easily. They fluttered around her as she flexed them, feeling them out since she hadn’t yet had a real chance to do so the night before. They were midnight black and silky to the touch. Each feather melded perfectly into the other creating a sight that was truly beautiful, reminding her strongly of a black cloak in the wind.

When she was done admiring herself she turned to look at Mik, curious as to what he was doing. Her blue eyes watched him carefully, memorizing his movements in case she would ever need to know what needed to be done here.

The odd devil stood up and wiped his thumb on his pant leg before closing his eyes. He took a deep breath and held it close to 10 seconds before exhaling quickly. a spark caught near his lips and a flame ran down to the blood he had spilt, running along the design as if it had been made of oil.

After a moment, the large circle he had drawn came to life, glowing with a dim yet lively purple light, the flames burning white.

"Alright. Stretch breaks over.... Back in the Jeep."

Madeline nodded, folding her wings against her back as tightly as she could to fit back into the jeep. She looked at the entrance to what she only describe as Hell and took a deep breath. Taking a look around she tried to memorize everything from the color of the sky to the thickness of the grass as the drove towards the White circle of fire. Who knew when she would see this place again?

Before she knew it they had gone through and she was blinded for a moment by everything she saw.

It was a strange feeling, a twisting falling sort of sensation in their stomachs before the jeep landed with a 'foof' and crak of the shocks, the axles holding their own.

They had landed in sand. Blinding white sand, the sun above them a brilliant yellow just like Earths. The sky was a bit greener though, and the moon was already present in the sky.

Mik shifted gears, then began to drive, not waiting for his traveling partner to take in the sights, or lack there of.

The compass he had on the dash was spinning out of control to the left, then would sift and spin to the right. "The cities and forests are much nicer than this." he assured her. "And the ports are just breathtaking..."

"Theres an entire other world." She breathed, her awestruck voice reminding Mik that while Madeline appeared and acted much older than her 16 years, the truth was that she really was just a 16 year old girl with all the fears and awe of one.

She stared out of the window, watching the land pass by in a blur, her blue eyes taking in everything that they could.

Mik looked over as he drove then grinned a bit. "Enjoying the barren wasteland?" he teased lightly. "we've got about two full days worth of this before we hit anything green."

Madeline turned to look over at Mik, his comment pulling her out of her reverie. She blushed lightly for a moment and turned away again, not wanting him to see that she was embarrassed.

“Its just so different. The only memories I have are of the city and then the camp. I’ve never seen desert before, or the moon so clearly, even if its in the sky at the wrong time. Its all so new.”

Mik glanced over. "It is gorgeous, isn't it..." he agreed after a moment. "There's alot less pollution here than there is on earth. Granted, we have our problems just like everyone else, but we tend to be kinder when handling them..."

He was looking at the road again. "So. I guess I should start tutoring you on how to speak." he mused. "You cant run around here speaking human and not expect to get your heart torn out."

“How to speak?” She asked, wondering for the umpteenth time what she had gotten herself in to. She had never been very good with languages, and from what he was saying nothing she had known before was going to work.

“I’d rather not die, so I suppose I don’t have much of a choice.”

"It's a saying.... Not like anyone would really kill you." he said. "Well, someone might, but.... never mind... First, we shoudl start with Jealin. It's the most commonly spoken language and anyone with a half decent education knows it."

Madeline nodded, not certain she quite believed him when he said no one would actually try and kill her.

“Jealin. Okay. Fair warning, I’ve never been particularly good at learning new languages. “

and so their lessons began, first learning directions, followed by greetings phrases and so on. By the time he pulled the jeep over to refuel and get the two of them some water from the back, she had a basic understanding of the grammar as well.

"Are you hungry?" he asked, tossing her the newly filled canteen.

Some part of her knew she should be starving, but living in the concentration camp with so very little to eat had shrunk Madeline’s stomach. So now even though it had been hours since she had last eaten, she still wasn’t hungry.

Taking the canteen she took a swig of water, letting the cool liquid coat her throat and soothe the dry aching feeling that had characterized her thirst. “I’m not hungry.” She said simply, before taking another drink of the canteen, holding the container tightly in her hands.

He repeated her claim, in Jealin. HE took a sip from his own canteen and bit into an apple, handing her a small bag of freeze dried fruit and nuts. "You need to eat at least a little. This heat will do things to you if you don't." he warned.

He sighed, leaning against the jeep, wiping the sweat off his forehead. "We'll drive another few hours, then stop for the night."

Madeline frowned, but took the food anyway. Eating each piece of fruit slowly and individually. She wasn’t hungry but she wouldn’t argue with him. He knew this world fall better than she did, so she had to trust his judgment.

“Are we going to stay in the jeep?” She asked, between bites.

"I think so." he nodded. "It's shelter if nothing else."

He grabbed a rubber band and pulled his hair back into it, glaring up like it would cause the sun to dim some.... No such luck. "Ugh.... I hate heat." he grumbled, climbing back into the drivers seat.

He started it up again, taking his foot off the clutch with a sigh. "When we reach the river, It's gonna be hard not to ump in head first." he mused.
