The Flower and the Snake

Scorpious frowned, sighing once she had turned a corner. His next class was muggle studies. Not particularly a class he needed to show up to to pass, nor one he wanted to be seen in with his reputation already hindered.

Instead, he turned and headed back to his dorm, ignoring the looks of any stray students in the hall he passed as he went.

It didn’t take long for the nurse to heal her fracture, especially since Scorpius had already reset the bone. The rest of the day passed in a quiet blur, and before she knew it night had fallen and she was in the common room doing some last minute homework. While she knew she needed to start studying for the potion they would have to brew on Monday, she couldn’t get her mind off the Hogsmeade trip tomorrow, and the fact she was going with Scorpius Malfoy of all people.

Lily could see her friend deep in thought and not on her homework, and so she confidentially leaned in closer to ask her what was on her mind. Albus and Hugo currently so involved in their game of Exploding Snap that they didn’t notice the two talking about anything.

“So, you’re going to go to Hogsmeade with him tomorrow right?” Lily asked, her eyes glinting mischievously.

“Did he tell you that?” Rose asked, startled.

“No, you’re expression did. He really is serious about you…”

“Yeah I guess so.” She murmered, more awed than doubtful. Lily however, didn’t catch that.

“You guess so?! I mean come on Rose he practically called you his lover to Celina in the Great Hall when you missed dinner. I’d say he’s pretty damn serious.”

At Rose’s stunned silence she continued.

“How do you feel about him?”

“I don’t really know. I like him a lot…It’s just so werid. My father is going to be furious.”

“Eh he’ll be mad at first, but you know Aunt Hermione will set him straight. If you’re so worried about it why not ask your mom anyways?”

Rose nodded, realizing that after all this time she still hadn’t thought about asking her mother about it.

“I’ll think about it. Maybe after tomorrow.”

Lily nodded, happy with the information she had gotten. Plans were forming in her head about the unlikely pair.

Rose didn’t bother trying to stay up much longer after that, deciding it was useless to study Wormwood when all she could think about was blonde hair and slivery blue eyes. The next morning she woke up just as dawn was breaking, and found herself unable to fall asleep again due to nervousness. She was dressed and at breakfast earlier than she’d ever been before, arriving before most of the other students. As people trickled in, she waited with bated breath for the announcement for those going to Hogsmeade to step into the Great Hall.

When it finally did she nearly fell over her chair.

“You’ll be fine.” Lily hissed, pushing her towards the door. She wasn’t sure where Scorpius would be. After all, he’d only said they would meet in the Hall, not exactly where in said hall.

He was there though, standing by himself with his black cloak on, his scarf keeping his neck covered and giving him a sort of boyish charm, rather than his usual handsome devil may care look.

He had his hands in his pockets, his hair pinned back again today. It was almost long enough to pull off a french braid.

He sat fidgeting, frowning. A large part of him was worried Rose wouldn't show. Not that he woudl blame her, though it would be quite the disappointment.

She only needed to look around for a moment before she spotted him leaning against the wall. Just standing there he took her breath away. He seemed almost unreal to her. What had she ever done in this world to deserve a guy like him, who was waiting for her of all people.

Shaking her head to try and ground herself, she took a deep breath and walked over to him with a smile on her face.

“Hey” she said, her smile soft.

Scorpious looked over, coming out of his daze and smiled, standing on his own as opposed to leaning against the wall. "Good morning." he said, looking her over. "All set?"

He had a good amount of allowance to spend today, and he planned on making it worth while. First, butter beer- then the surprise. Somehow, he had gotten his mother to support the idea he had in store for Rose, More than likely she wrote it off as a rebellious fling, regardless though he had a trick or two up his sleeve.

Rose was about to go on a date with a heir to a billionaire...

Fun time.

Rose nodded, her smile growing larger by the moment. As much as she couldn’t believe it was happening it was, and she was going to enjoy every last damn minute of it. It didn’t matter what anyone thought at this point, not even her father. She was going to enjoy every last minute she spent with the Malfoy heir and she was going to make sure he had fun too.

Grabbing his hand, Rose for once allowed him to lead her outside and towards Hogsmeade, not sure exactly what they were doing that day. He hadn’t really told her.

Scorpious took her hand, walking with her down the snowy path to the town. "We'll do it this way.... A or B first?" he asked.

Should she pick A, he woudl bring her to get a butter beet to keep her warm... Should she pick B, he woudl give her the surprise first.

Rose kept her eyes down as she walked, her hand still warmly clasped in his. She wasn’t sure what was safe to look at, so for now her eyes stay trained on her feet. Her ears however were trained on his voice, listening to what he was saying to her.

“I don’t get to know what each one is do I?” She asked playfully, smiling though her eyes were still trained on the ground. Her complete concentration on her feet had to do with the fact that when she was nervous she was a complete klutz. Add snow to that mixture and you had a disaster waiting to happen.

“Well, if I don’t get to know which one is which, I’ll go with B.”

Scorpious grinned when she chose B. "You know, you shouldn't look down all the time." he said. "You'll miss where we're going if you do." he teased lightly, veering slight to the left as they entered the town, away from the pub. He had something far more... luxurious in mind.

He was headed to Madame Holly's Fine Gowns and Garms. A ridiculously expensive custom clothes outfitter that only the most elite of the wizardry world visited in Hogsmeade.

He stepped up the small stoop, holding the door for her. "Come on." he encouraged with a smile, seeing her hesitate.

" Young Master Malfoy! Come in, come in." a witch beckoned with a bright smile. Apparently Madame Holly, part Vella. She was tall with silvery blond hair that could rival Scorpious' own. "I've been expecting you and the little Ms." she smiled at Rose. "Come in, I've already brewed some fresh tea for you two kids."

Rose didn’t know what to think as she stood in a store that she never thought she’d ever be inside of in her entire life. The very cushions that the witch gestured to for them to sit on looked like priceless silk antiques and she had never been so forcefully reminded of her family’s lower station in the world then at that moment. There she was in her clothes that she had once considered rather nice, though looking around her she realized how very fooled she was.

Everything was of the highest quality fabric and craftsmanship. She felt dirty for even being in the store, like she didn’t belong. She looked nervously at Scorpius before looking away again quickly. She didn’t want him to see how uncomfortable she was at that moment. What would he think? This was what he had been raised with she reminded herself, I doubt he’s trying to make you feel bad.

Scorpious sat next to her, offering her a reassuring smile. nice and warm, right?" he felt bad seeing how tense she was.

"Here you are." Madame Holly handed them both tea with a spoon of honey to stirr with. "Now, I vas told that yoo are Master Malfoys escort to zis years Yule Ball." she smiled at Rose sitting down. "I must say, I'm envious! You have such lovely skin, Ms. Weasley." she flattered. "Did you have any color in mind for your dress?"

Rose looked over at Scorpius in horror when the woman questioned her, not believing her ears. “You didn’t.” She whispered, already knowing the answer to that question. Taking a deep breath Rose gave herself a mental pep talk. Alright, she thought, you can do this. Its just a stupid dress that he’s buying you so you don’t have to buy one on such short notice. He’s being considerate and getting you one hell of a present. What would mom do? She’d be gracious and hold her head high like this is nothing. That’s right. Its nothing. You do this all the time. You got this.

After she mentally psyched herself, she smiled warmly at the woman, her entire demeanor going from incredibly tense and uncomfortable to warm and open.

“You know I haven’t really thought about it. I just recently found out I was going to be attending.”

The only indication that she was still uncomfortable or worried was the strong grip she had on his hand, using him as her lifeline.

She nodded. "Well, would you like to see some swatches?" she offered picking up a book. She let go of it, allowing the book to float over to them on its own accord hovering just above the table. "I vould think I nice blue or green woudl look lovely on you. Your red hair woudl truly accent it." she smiled.

Scorpious allowed her to try and cut off the blood flow to his hand. Using his free hand he opened the book for Rose. "I think if we put Rose in anything Green the school might try to kill me." Scorpious grinned a bit sheepishly. "But the call is all yours." he looked back to Rose, hoping she would like the gift.

“I like the color green…”she murmured, looking at the book critically. She smiled slightly, she couldn’t help it as she looked at the myriad of colors that she was able to choose from. Once Rose started to actually relax, she found that she was rather enjoying the idea of a brand new ball gown for the dance.

She turned the pages slowly, eyeing each color with delight. Suddenly an idea came to mind and she grinned mischievously.

“I think I know what I might like. But, if possible, I think it should be a surprise.”

She looked at Scorpius and smiled brightly. The way she figured it, two could play at that game. If he was going to surprise her with something like this, then he was going to just have to wait and see what the outcome would be.

He blinked. "Um... o-kay?" He had apparently not expected that.
madame Holly laughed in delight. "Fantastic!" she cheered. "Master Malfoy, if you'll please--?"

Scorpious blinked and let go of Roses hand. Just like that he had just had the situation taken out of his hands, not something he was used to. "I'll be back in an hour?"

Madame holly nodded. "More zen enough time." she smiled.

Scorpious rubbed the back of his neck a bit awkwardly. "Alright then... I'll be back..." he smiled at Rose, then headed to the door.

"So then..." madame Holly smiled. "What is ze big idea?"

Rose used up every bit of that hour planning a dress that was going to absolutely beautiful. Madame Holly told her the dress would be delivered directly to her room the night before the ball, giving her plenty of time to show her “wonderful” friends if she so pleased before the big night. Rose could’ve laughed aloud at that comment. There was no one that was going to see this dress except Scorpius himself.

She thanked the woman again before stepping out of the shop, her cloak loosly around her shoulders. It was still cold out but the shine was shining, making her feel rather warm. Especially right after her perfectly executed plan. She looked over to see Scorpius leaning against the side of the building waiting for her, a small scowl on his face. She smiled. He probably didn’t like being out of the loop on this one.

“All done.” She said brightly, walking over to him. This was turning out to be quite a wonderful day so far, even if she started it out not knowing what to do at all.

“Now don’t be sour. It’ll be worth it. You’ll see.”

He smiled back at her, a bit reluctantly. "I'm sure it will be." he said honestly. "You aren't cross that I didn't tell you, are you?" he asked, having been scowling at himself when she pulled him from his thoughts.

Next, he planned on bringing her to get some butterbeer and he would, as he promised, tell her what he knew about the war... Or whatever she didn't anyway.

Rose smiled. “No, I’m not cross. I was just really surprised was all. I’ve never been in a store like that.” She said, tapering off at the end. She’d never been angry with him. Just very embarrassed. It had taken her a bit to calm down and get used to the situation, but once she kicked him out to surprise him it had become much more fun.

She took his hand again, her smile genuine. “Don’t worry about it. Besides, I already got my minor revenge. You don’t get to know now what I’ll be wearing to the ball. Its my little surprise.”

"Fair enough." he smiled. "Did she fill you on tea or did you still want to get butterbeer?" he asked.

He was sure to wrap his arm around her, having gotten a bit cold himself by waiting outside for an hour.

mmm Butterbeer sounds wonderful.” She said, curling her body into his. He was always so cold, she thought to herself, wrapping one of her arms around his chest. He was taller than her by a full head so she could easily slip under his arm and rest her head on his shoulder if she wanted to.

“C’mon then. Lets get inside. You’re freezing to death out here.”

Scorpious chuckled. "What else is new? I'm always cold." he said, walking with her to the tavern. He was more than happy to have her cuddle into his side as they went, pushing open the door for her, ignoring the wolf-calls form the shrunken heads.

"Have yourselves a seat dears." a tall tawny witch called. "I'll be with you in a moment."

"Come on..." Scorpious guided her over to a corner of the pub, close to the fireplace. "So, what do you plan on doing bout potions class?"

Rose groaned at the mention of the impending potions assignment. She’d tried to stay up the night before to study but it just hadn’t worked out too well.

“I don’t know. This potion is so important, especially if its going to be on our N.E.W.T.S. Damn… I’ve been trying to study for it and get an idea of how its supposed to go… I was actually going to ask you if I could take you up on that offer you made that first day we ever talked. Albus said he’d help me study and he’s usually pretty good at Potions but you explain it better than he does.”

She trailed off, a slight blush marring her cheeks. She was going to say a lot more than that but she decided to hold off on that. After all, she didn’t want to sound a gushing thirteen year old girl.

“Are you worried about the potion at all?”

"I'm more worried about people messing up the potion." he admitted. "How about this. This weekend, Ill brew the potion with you twice, the make you do it once yoruself. How's that sound?"

Before she coudl answer, the elderly witch had come over to them. "Alright dears, what can I do you for?"

"Just a butterbeer for me please. Extra nutmeg."

“Butterbeer for me too. Nothing extra.” She smiled at the waitress before turning back to Scorpius, strangely proud of the surprised look on the woman’s face at seeing who exactly was with the Malfoy heir.

“That would be great!” She exclaimed, in response to the idea of making the potion together a few times before the actual class. Practicing something before she had to actually do it meant that if she could get it right at least once she’d be fine when she actually had to make it for real.

When the butterbeer arrived at their table, Rose took a good gulp of hers reveling in the taste.

“Ah. Its been way too long since I had one of these.”

Scorpious smiled. "You know, I brewed this with my mother once." he said. "It's an old recipe." he added.

Who woudl have thought a Malfoy did something as common as make something Home made such as butterbeer....
