To Make a Prince

Rakuen didn’t say a word, though he did raise his eyebrow at her brave words. He was glad she had accepted his offer none the less, and no matter the bravado she put on he could see that she was relieved. But then again, he couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t relieved himself.

“Lets go then.” he said gruffly, flinching slightly as he realized that perhaps silence was going to be his bet.

Deciding that action was best at this point he started walking towards what he hoped was the way out of this accursed city. He needed to avoid the guards as much as possible. He wouldn’t be able to even slightly relax until he reached the cool shade of the forest that was on the outskirts of this metropolis.

Getting out of the city was much easier than Rakuen had expected, considering how avidly the guards had been searching for them. Once he reached the forest however, he did not stop his forward movement. He wanted to put as much distance between himself and the city as possible, and the continuing movement made trying to speak to Su unnecessary.

But darkness eventually had to fall, and with his own brand of precision he went about his tasks to make camp without needing to utter a single word. Part of him felt bad about the silence as he skinned the two rabbits he had caught for dinner. Some part of him knew he should try and speak to her. But as he handed over the roasted rabbit, he still had not spoken a single word.

Rakuen watched her eat intently, barely touching his own food. She was fascinating to him, but not as a normal human is usually fascinated by things that are by their very nature foreign to him. He was accustomed to her kind. Had lived and played beside them when he had been but a boy growing up in the palace. His father had enacted laws making them equals in the land, laws the false king had replaced with hatred and lies.

But Rakuen was not intrigued by that. Instead it was the innate grace she carried, the fear in her eyes, the practiced way her hands held her food as if it was a hard won catch. She was wary of thieves and with her luminescent orbs looked as deadly as a wolf protecting her young. She was the type of woman that Rakuen would have been ordered to stay away from as a young princeling because she exuded nothing but danger and of course power. But for Kataki, as the man he had become, she was nothing but alluring.

“You’ve spent a long time alone.” He said, not even bothering to word it as a question. He knew it was the truth just as much as she did.

Rakuen simply watched her. They stared at each other, neither gaze wavering in their intensity. He wanted to figure her out, to understand her motives, desires, fears. He knew why he himself wanted and desired things. He knew why he had asked her to come along with him for a time.

“Why come with me then?” He asked bluntly.
