| | Natalya slowly brought her head back and closed her eyes, enjoying the cool air of the building's shadow. It was so hot--almost too hot to think. Letting her muscles relax she dropped her entire weight into the side of the shed, taking a few moments to release the tension in her body. A small yawn escaped her strawberry lips, and she brought a hand up to her mouth.
"I didn't realize how exhausted I am..."
Bringing her head upright she glanced around, scanning the area for signs of life. Avoiding any run-ins with security or wandering coaches seemed like a good idea. Better to face the consequences of ditching tomorrow morning then right now.
"No one's around...I think I'll just close my eyes for a little bit. Just twenty minutes or so won't hurt, and then I can keep searching."
And with that she let out one last yawn, letting her eyes rest once more as she gave in to the heavy weight of sleep.

| The steady sound of her breathing reached his hyper-sensitive ears, and his tensed body relaxed. Turning around, Taylor approached the sleeping girl cautiously, making sure he didn’t make a single sound. Coming around the sports shed, he knelt down beside her and lightly brushed a strand of hair out of her face. It was frustrating to say the least. He was always in control, never faltering. Then suddenly, a girl that had been so insignificant just a few days before, was occupying his mind completely. She allowed him no rest from his thoughts, even his dreams were not safe. He couldn’t even walk away now, when he knew it was the best thing he could possibly do. This wasn’t normal; his reactions, desires, and even now his need to stay here with her, to make sure she stayed safe in her slumber. As he watched her sleep, his ears trained on her breathing for signs that she was awakening, while his other senses were focused on their surroundings, he tried to figure out what was possibly possessing him. An old legend came to mind, a story from his childhood, and suddenly he understood. The horror that crossed his features was so obvious that had anyone been able to see it they would have wondering who had just died. It couldn’t be possible, he thought to himself, looking down at the sleeping girl. It just couldn’t. Getting up quickly, he took one last look at her sleeping form before he forced himself to run. It hurt far more than he wanted it to, just leaving her there, but he needed answers and there was only person he could think of that would answer them. The packs Keeper. He ran without rest or stopping, maintaining his human form so that he wouldn’t have to stop to take of his clothes. His pack mates said hello as he passed, some growled, but all were surprised at the determined look on his face, and his unwavering gait that didn’t allow him to even return their greeting. As only a member of his rank could do, he burst into the Keeper’s home, his eyes wild. “Show some respect young one.” The Keeper said, turning wizened eyes on Taylor. He quickly dropped to one knee with his head bowed, shame written on his features. “Keeper, I am sorry, but I must know something.” He looked up again, his eyes full of fear and yet a great desire to understand. “I see your fear Taylor. But more than that I see in you something that I have not seen but only heard of from my ancient fathers. I thought this long gone, but I see this is not so.” “So the legend is true? I have no choice…” “Protect her Taylor. You will die if you do not.” | |

| | Natalya awoke to a blinding light, and she cringed at the instant searing pain in her eyes. Groaning slightly as her vision slowly adjusted to the lighting, she brought herself to a crouch. She was no longer in the shade--the sun had shifted so she was now being beaten mercilessly by the suffocating sun. Shit. Her teeny cat nap had lasted much longer than expected.
Rising quickly to her feet she searched for any other students. Had school already gotten out? Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion, and she cautiously stepped out onto the baseball field a few yards away. There was no one practicing, so maybe school was still in session? A thought suddenly struck her, and she frowned deeply. There was an away game today. Dammit.
Following the line from home plate to first base, Natalya adjusted the backpack that was now becoming steadily heavier and damp with sweat. Why was it so god damn hot today? The weather was never this nice--if sunburns and sweat was what you called nice. Groaning, Natalya trudged slowly across the outfield and barely hopped the fence, her movements groggy and sloppy. She felt drained and irritable, and she'd almost forgotten her purpose for being out here in the first place.
Taylor. In an instant Natalya was almost knocked off her feet, and she found herself clutching the fence behind her for support. It was all too much; the swirling images in her mind made her head dizzy and her stomach lurch. Letting out a small cry she shook her golden locks back and forth, as if trying to shake the flooding scenes from her strained conscience. After what seemed like hours the images abruptly halted, however, and she was left on the ground with nothing but sharp flashes of a tight embrace, sweet words and an anguished kiss.
Struggling to regain herself, Natalya began to gag on all fours, trying to steady her trembling muscles. What the hell had just happened? Unable to think, she could only remain in that position for a few minutes longer--until she could muster the strength to grab a hold of her bearings and return once again to her feet.
Home. She need to get home. If only she lived closer...

| Upon hearing those words Taylor ran from the Keeper’s home, not even uttering a single word in farewell. It was too much for him. Too much for his human form to deal with it any longer. As he ran into the forest he stripped out of his clothes, throwing them behind him without a care for finding them ever again. Deep in the forest, and stripped of all his clothing, it took him seconds to make the transformation into the creature that could handle this information better. Where Taylor once stood, there was now a black and white wolf. Other than his rather odd coloring and larger size, Taylor was now nearly indistinguishable from a regular wolf. With a wolf’s speed he took off running, feeling the ground beneath his paws, and the wind in his fur. Only in this form could he truly let himself go. To let himself feel the world around him instead of the feelings of a mortal man. Even as a wolf the words of the Keeper still reverberated in his head. However, as a wolf the confusion he felt and his need to rebel against fate was fading. Wolves did not fight against nature, they followed it, and what Taylor the man fought against, was simply nature to the wolf. The wolf stopped running and sniffed the air around him, getting a sense of how far away he was from where his instincts told him he needed to be. He then turned around and began to run back, but not towards home. This run was much slower, no longer filled with the haste of someone trying to run from an inescapable truth, but with the smooth gait of someone who knew what he now must do. Taylor knew better to fight anymore. The simple logic of wolf thought had won out, and with the knowledge passed down through the generations of pups, he knew without a doubt that this was the path he must walk. By the time he made it back to town, found and followed Natayla’s scent, and traced her back to this house, night had fallen. He was still in wolf form, not trusting himself as anything else, and merely watched from a distance. He would keep watch until the day had come when he would change back and go to school. | |

| | She felt as if she'd been pummeled by a bus. Every muscle in her body hurt, every breath was painful, and every movement forced. If the source of her discomfort were known it would have lessened her suffering, but pain along with confusion only leads to further ache and irritation. She winced and slowly rolled over, laying her face in her furry green pillow. What had happened to her back there?
The walk home had been horrible. At first she had nothing to do but ignore the dull pain throughout her body. As her journey progressed, however, that dull ache soon transformed into a shooting pain that began at her ankles and ended straight up into her heaving chest. With every step she took this pain magnified, almost to the point where she was unable to make her way up the steps to her front door. The first thing she had done was drag herself upstairs and let the dizziness wash over once again.
She had awoken a few hours later--now it was dark, and she still could not muster the strength to leave her bed. Her parents hadn't come home yet, and her brother was staying the night at his friend's house. She was home alone and couldn't even call for a glass of water. Swallowing against her bone dry throat Natalya rolled over once again, this time toward the edge of her bed. Saying a quick prayer she forced her legs over the edge, a wave of relief passing over her at the fact they hadn't crumpled beneath her weight. Although it was clear her body was not ready for any unnecessary movements, she could no longer lay around. She needed some fresh air.
Trembling, she walked unsteadily toward her window, seating herself upon the bench that lay just below the window sill. She brought her arms up and heaved upward, smiling in satisfaction as it opened wide. She may have been hurting like hell, but at least she wasn't weak to the point where she couldn't open a stupid window. Leaning against the window pane her emerald eyes rested upon the bright moon above her, and she closed her eyes as she enjoyed its soft glow.
The Moon. Oh, how she had grown sick with the Sun today.
Letting out a soft sigh she let her eyelids flutter open, once again gazing out into the fresh, cool night.

| He had been pacing around the bushes, watching the house for so long, that he had begun to relax. As long as she stayed safe within her house, he wouldn’t need to worry so much. But as soon as he had laid down, a sweet scent carried on the moonlit breeze caressed his nose, and before he could stop himself he was nearly out in the full moonlight, beyond the safety of the dark trees and brush. ‘She’s stunning…’ he thought, and in the moonlight she truly was. With his lupine eyes he could see every strand of her blonde hair beautifully reflected, her eyes sparkling with the rays of Luna. Yet, just as the thought crossed his mind, he realized that he wasn’t just looking at her, she was looking at him. Without a second thought he bounded into the forest, putting some distance between himself and the blonde beauty. Each bound was paining him more and more, but his fear of what she may have seen pushed him on. He got to a clearing a few yards away. Close enough for him to still smell her sweet scent, but far enough that she wouldn’t easily find him should she come outside to look. Had he been human he would have groaned aloud at that thought. Her coming into the woods was the last thing he wanted to happen. | |

As Natalya took a deep breath of night air, her attentions were suddenly caught by a rustling in the bushes nearby. Squinting, she tried to make out any form or sign of an intruder, but the suspect had clearly made his escape--if, in fact, there was anyone there to begin with.
Frowning slightly, she took one last deep breath before closing herself off from the outside. Her bed was once again calling to her, but a nice glass of water was definitely needed. Once again walking shakily, she slowly made her way to the bathroom, grabbing one of the small Dixie cups inside of the cabinet. The sound of the cool water instantly made her feel better, and she eagerly filled it up and guzzled it down.
She was so thirsty all of a sudden! She continued to fill up cup after cup, cup after cup until her stomach could no longer take it, and yet she was still thirsting for more. It was beginning to drive her crazy.
Filling up the cup once last time she brought it with her back into her room, setting it on her nightstand for later on in the night. While the thirst still tugged at her throat, she laid herself into bed and closed her eyes. All she could do now was sleep these strange symptoms away...

| The night had passed slowly once Taylor had run from Natayla's home. But he had kept faithful watch, going without sleep for the entire night so that he could make sure that nothing happened to her. He only went home around dawn because with the sun rising he felt it was safe to leave her for a few, and because if he didnt go home and get ready for school his parents would be furious. School was very important, especially for Taylor since he was to one day run the pack. However, he refused to do more than quickly shower and dress. He needed to be near her. For some reason he was nervous, skittish. He felt like something was wrong, but he couldnt pinpoint what that was exactly. He made record time to school and once there starting searching for her. Normally however, he didnt use his heightened senses at school because he was so overwhelmed by all the sound and smells. He couldn't pick up her sweet scent anywhere, and slowly the panic was setting in. When the final bell rang and he stil hadn't found her, the wrath of the pack was all that kept him in school. | |

| | With the first conscious breath she took, she almost let out a scream. It felt as if her lungs were on fire, and she struggled to hold her breath against the searing pain. Finally she could hold her breath no more, but to her surprise the pain vanished as she inhaled sharply.
She lay there for a long moment, her pattern of breathing slowly returning to normal. After a long night of restless sleep, these aches and jolting pains hadn't subsided? Bringing a hand to her forehead she wiped the sweat from her brow, grimacing at the sticky sensation. She felt feverish, and her stomach still lurched while her throat continued to demand more water. She immediately downed the Dixie cup beside her.
It was obvious she would not be attending school today. Amazing. That meant yet another slew of detentions if her mother didn't call in for her, and an immanent cursing out from her mother if she did. She'd find out she'd ditched yesterday for sure. But seeing the condition she was in now, her mother would have to believe she had left because she felt sick...apparently too sick to call and ask to be excused. She hoped her mother would buy it.
Until then she could only wait for her to come upstairs and demand a reason for her still being in bed. Great. Her mother was not a morning person.

| Minutes passed by like hours for Taylor as his first block teacher began his lecture. Each minute that passed made him more and more anxious, like there was something he was missing that was vitally important. He needed to get to his second class. That was the one that he had with Natayla. If she wasn’t there….No. He couldn’t think about that right now. Had to focus. When that bell rang though, he took off like a bat out of hell. In no time at all he was sitting in his desk for second period, his eyes trained on the door. When the final bell rang his blood ran cold. No Natayla. Where was she? His heart pounded, and yet he felt cold all over. Was she okay? Something inside told him she wasn’t. This day wasn’t going to pass fast enough. | |

| | After enduring the fussing of a frantic yet still skeptical mother, Natalya was finally able to rest quietly in her bed. Both her parents had left for work, and her brother had slipped in once they had disappeared so he would not be caught ditching school. She had half a mind to scold him for taking his education so lightly, but seeing as she had just ditched the day before herself, she did not feel she had the grounds to do so. Sneaky little brat.
Snuggling deeper into her blankets she rested her tired eyes, taking in a small breath and allowing her body to sink into her soft mattress. Natalya hadn't taken a day off of school since the semester started-- it was nice to take a day to herself to think things through. Her mind bustled with a multitude of questions and laden with heavy confusion. And these images she was seeing--these visions--what were their source?
They came in rapid flashes, some painful and some joyous, and she felt every single sense as if it were her own. Sometimes she was left in melancholy tears, others in agony, and some--the rarer ones--in pure and sheer happiness.
The visions were always difficult to completely recall, however. The memories only came in fragments, and what she was usually left with was some intense emotion she could not understand. The faces were clouded, the words fuzzy and often impossible to interpret, and with each passing episode she was left with more and more questions--as well as more and more frustration.
There was one thing she had come to understand, however, and that was that these visions became much more clear when they came to her while she was asleep. She closed her eyes, letting the drowning wave of sleep engulf her.

| As the hours slowly passed, Taylor slowly forced himself to calm down. Pushing the panic back he tried to think logically through what was happening. His wolf side was demanding he find her but somewhere in his mind Taylor understood that whatever the legend was entailing that was part of it. Figuring out the legend seemed the best way to keep his mind occupied while he waited until the end of the day. He knew that once that final bell rang he would go in search of her, but for now, he needed to be calm. What did he remember of the legend? Not much that was for sure. All any of the young pups that had heard that story so long ago had really retained was that their mate would be chosen for them, and without that person they would fall. He remembered his fellows laughing at the idea and saying how stupid it was. That they would hate never having a choice over who they mated with. But that was the thing wasn’t it? Wolves mated for life but the human part of their minds allowed them to leave if they absolutely must. This legend, if the bonded pair lost one another the one left would perish. They had to be together. That was the only thing he could truly remember though he knew there was more to it than that. He’d have to ask the Keeper. The sound of the final bell interrupted his thoughts and brought him back to the present. The panic rose in him again, though this time it was far more contained. He felt like he knew a bit more why it was there in the first place. If she wasn’t okay he didn’t know what he would do, and with no way of knowing how she was he was going haywire. But some part of him understood a bit more now about why this was happening, though he still fought against it being him. He walked to her house with a measured gait, trying to feel and look calm. Each slow step was painful to the boy that could run like the wind if he only changed form, but he knew that he needed to be level headed for this. Upon reaching her house, he knocked on the door. Not too loud, but forcefully so that whoever was home would need to open that door. Just as he heard footsteps coming to open the door, a new panic set in. He hadn’t figured out what he was going to say. | |

| | "I'LL GET IT!!!"
These were the blaring words Natalya was so rudely awoken by, followed by a pair of heavy feet shuffling down the stairs and toward the front door. Had someone knocked? She hadn't heard anyone rap on the door, though such a small sound wasn't likely to disrupt her in such a deep sleep. Her brother's wailing voice, however, seemed to do the trick quite nicely.
Struggling to sit up, Natalya inched her shoulders upward until they were propped against her pillows and let out a frustrated growl. Why was she so damn sick all of a sudden?? Giving up on ever leaving her god forsaken bed, she could only shout to her brother.
"Sasha! Look through the window before you open the door to see who it is! I don't want you letting a stranger into our house!"
A satisfied smile immediately crossed her rose colored lips, and she crossed her arms over her chest. At least she still had the power to yell. That had to count for something, didn't it? Hearing now response, Natalya called down once again.
"Sasha!! Did you hear what I said??"
The creaking of the opening door answered her question for her.

| Taylor stood and stared into the eyes of a younger boy, about 12 he would guess. The boy was strikingly similar to Natayla, which told him that must be her younger brother. It took him only a split second to figure out what to say to this boy who was looking at him with an open jawed expression. “Hey, my name is Taylor Larkspur. Is Natayla home?” He didn’t think the boy would ask for further explanation but if he did he had an answer ready that Natayla probably wouldn’t like but the boy wouldn’t argue with. Either way he knew he could get past the small door keeper that was holding him up from making sure Natayla was okay. The question was, would she let him see her? He hadn’t forgotten about kissing her that day. Maybe she was angry with him. At the thought of her rejecting him, he felt like his heart was being choked by a metal band. It nearly took his breath away, and all his concentration to keep a lazy smile on his face, rather than show the pain that he felt. | |

| | Sasha's hazel eyes gazed blankly up to meet Taylor's golden orbs, and he shifted uncomfortably.
"Who are you?" he asked, his words sweet and innocent. "How do you know my sister?"
While Sasha was much younger than his sister, he had a fierceness within him when it came to his older sibling. His previously coy expression now turned into a suspicious glare, and he stood protectively in the doorway between Taylor and the inside of his home.
Natalya immediately tried to break from her bed-ridden state, and she fought the whimper that threatened to escape her throat as she nearly toppled to the ground. "Sasha!" she called out, trying to control her now violently shaking legs. "Who is at the door honey? Please answer me."

| Taylor sighed dramatically, starting to put on his show for Sasha. Looking at the kid he realized this probably wasn’t going to be as easy as he wanted it to be. “Ugh this is embarrassing. Well, I know her from school and she wasn’t there today so I was worried. I mean, you gotta promise you wont tell her okay?” He said conspiratorially, lowering his voice slightly, as if he through he might get overheard. He paused for a moment as if waiting for the boy to assure him that he wouldn’t rat him out to his older sister and said in barely above a whisper, “I kinda like her you know? So, I just wanted to make sure she was okay.” It wasn’t a lie. That fact scared Taylor quite a bit though if he was honest with himself he had liked her before all this legend mumbo jumbo had started. Now it was just a hell of a lot trickier.

| | "Sasha!!" Natalya's voice was urgent now, and a panic rose within her throat that threatened to close it up. Why wasn't he answering?? Hundreds of horrible scenarios began to flash through her mind, and she forced her trembling limbs toward her door.
The little boy barely paid attention to his older sister's demands as he looked Taylor over conspicuously, obviously trying to decide whether or not he should trust the stranger.
"Sasha, you answer me right now or so help me God!!" Natalya's voice was now shrill, and it could be heard coming nearer as she slowly made her way toward the top of the stairs.
"There's no one at the door!!" young Sasha snapped in reply, causing Natalya to stop in her tracks. "Geez, Natalya! Stop yelling like a crazy person, will ya?? You don't need to come down, just go back to bed or something."
Flashing Taylor a small, mischievous smile he stepped aside, allowing space for him to enter the house.
"Hurry up before she comes down," he whispered urgently. "She's crazy."

| Taylor grinned, instantly deciding that this kid was alright. He’d have to find some way to repay him for this when he had the chance. Without hesitation Taylor headed for where he had heard Natalya’s voice. He climbed the stairs silently, his anxiety lessening with each step. He had heard her voice, and as he drew closer her smell assaulted his nose, again reassuring him that she was indeed alive though not entirely well. Something was tainting her scent at the moment, anxiety perhaps? He wasn’t sure. When he reached her door, he took a breath and knocked twice on the door way before sticking his head around the corner with a big grin on his face. “Good to see you alive.” | |

| | It was Natalya's immediate reaction to throw the first pillow she laid eyes on. It wasn't premeditated, it wasn't even a decision she had made herself for any sort of satisfaction or pay back. No, it was a simple response that left her mouth agape as it perfectly smacked Taylor directly in the face.
"Oh, no..." she muttered under her breath, leaning backward against her bed for support as she mustered all the energy she had to shoot him a dirty look.
"What are you doing here?! You tell me right now," she demanded, trying her best to cross her arms over her chest without losing her balance once again.
"And how do you know where I live??"

| It took Taylor a moment to recover from a face full of pillow, especially since it was such a concentrated source of her scent. He was just so happy and relieved to see her alive and well, and the anxiety and worry that had permeated his mind from the moment he left her side dissipated, leaving him practically giddy. “Wow awesome thank you for being concerned and wanting to check up on you huh?” He asked, trying to give her a stern expression but only looking comical in the end. He looked like a dog that was beyond pleased with itself, like when it found a new toy it had lost. “And if you must know it wasn’t all that difficult to find out where you live. I just asked a couple people.” He hoped that his status as popular kid extraordinaire would make her stop asking about that particular piece of information. He couldn’t exactly tell her that he had followed her scent, or that this was the second time he had been at her house. | |

From his recent shocking actions she'd be more adept to believing he had followed her on her way home from school one day rather than just asking someone like a normal person. And what if he hadn't been allowed inside? Would he have had a stakeout on her front lawn?
The image of Taylor roasting a marshmallow, complete with tent, outside her house immediately came to mind, and she quickly shook it away with a grimace.
Ugh, why was it that as soon as he entered her head felt as if it were going to burst? And just when she'd thought her headache couldn't get any worse...
"Okay, say I believed you asked someone for directions...Why would you come to check on me in the first place??"
Yes, the structure of the question was a bit rude, but in her defense it WAS a logical question. No one knew she was sick but her little brother because he had been home when she came stumbling in, and she had been completely fine yesterday at school...what was the harm in missing one, unimportant little day? And what reason would that give him to physically come visit her house to make sure she was alright?

| Without asking for permission he walked into her room and leaned against the wall, turning to stare at an inconspicuous piece of jewelry on her dresser as he tried to come up with an answer to her question. He couldn’t exactly tell her the truth, but he could answer her question without lying. He grimaced slightly as he thought about her reaction. Turning back to look at her he shrugged, and while his features were carefully schooled into an impassive mask, his eyes blazed and seemed to have a life of their own as they studied her. “I was worried. I left in a bit of a hurry yesterday, so I wasn’t sure if something had happened or not. I’m glad you’re okay after all.” None of it was a lie, though he was certain she wanted more of an answer from him. Having her with him in such close proximity was calming to his mind, but he knew it was dangerous to stay any longer. She was suspicious of him enough as is, and if he wanted to stay after completing his “make sure she’s okay“ mission, then he really would have to come up with an answer. “Well, guess I better get going then. Feel better soon!” He said, his face lighting up with another breath taking smile as he started for the door, his hand up in a impromptu goodbye wave. | |

| | "Wait."
Such an ordinary, common word, yet at this particular moment its new found power immediately seized all signs of movement within the room. An invisible pair of hands groped at Natalya's chest, grasping the air within her lungs and inhibiting her ability to take the breath needed to follow up her surprising outburst.
At the expression of utter shock on Taylor's face, however, that captured air was quickly released in a violent cough attack that left her gasping in panic.
What in the hell was she thinking? Why had she asked him to stay after making such a big deal about him showing his face in the first place? In all honesty, she hadn't really planned on stopping him. It just kind of...well, slipped out.
And now she was practically suffocating to death because of it. If she didn't die of embarrassment, at least the lack of oxygen would take her...

| Taylor didn’t pause to think through his actions, didn’t stop to wonder why she had stopped him in the first place. All he knew was that she was coughing, panicky, and probably couldn’t breathe. So, he did the one thing that felt natural to him. He walked across the room in a few quick strides, took her into his arms, and rubbed her back in small circles, trying to get her to breathe again normally. As her coughing subsided, his humming could be heard, a low and melodious tune, comforting in its simplicity, and alluring coming from him. From the moment he had held her he had started the tune, though it couldn’t be heard over her coughing. | |

| | Natalya's previously haggard breathing slowly began to return to normal, but her attentions were not on her own well-being. No, she was now only interested in the enchanting tune escaping his perfect lips. It was utterly enthralling, and her dark chocolate orbs remained fixated upon Taylor. It took her a moment to realize he had now stopped his humming, let alone that she was no longer unable to inhale without choking, but she couldn't bring herself to tear her gaze away. It was as if she were under a spell.
"Where did you learn that?" she blurted out, her strength to speak returning as well. It was yet another rude question to ask, especially without thanking him for calming her breathing, but Natalya was not known for keeping her curiosity to herself.
And she wanted answers. Starting now.
